Encaustic painting is a versatile, spontaneous medium using beeswax mixed with colored pigments that are applied melted to an absorbant surface. It is one of the earliest painting techniques dating back as far as 100-300AD. Encaustic goes from solid to liquid and back to solid and can be used to create layers and textures. It can also be combined with other materials to create mixed media works of art.
